The Future of Skin in Summer.
Since the very first day I started working in this field, 16 years ago, one of the biggest concerns people have had about their skin is pigmentation.
It’s estimated that melasma (a common type of skin discoloration) can affect up to 33% of the population. Summer after summer, I witnessed the shame, the lowered self-esteem, the need to hide, and even a gradual withdrawal from social life. And honestly, it was hard. As a professional, seeing these kinds of emotions was, well, heartbreaking.
Over the years, we’ve learned a lot about these skin changes. Dermatologists, pharmacists, healthcare professionals, aestheticians/ facialists, we’ve all evolved in our approaches. Though our methods differ, they’re often complementary. And in treating different types of pigmentation, we’ve all come to one crucial understanding: we must not harm the skin. The consequence of an inflamed skin can be hyperpigmentation.
Which brings us back to the basics: the first-line treatments. To a conscious choice of prevention over correction. And that is the future.
Prevention can be unmotivating, as it’s invisible, slow, and hard to measure. But it works. It delivers long-term, consistent results. Prevention is a healthy skin. Even when corrective treatments are needed, it’s prevention that enhances their effectiveness and ensures lasting results, with a sustainable investment.
What we know today is incredibly valuable. Educating without judgment, and adapting recommendations to each client’s reality, is absolutely essential in our practice, as it contributes to awareness and consistency. And this is the future of skin in summer:
- Sun protection;
- Avoiding direct sun exposure, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM;
- Always wearing a hat and sunglasses;
- Effective cleansing (including double cleansing at night) and deep hydration;
- Drinking plenty of water (minimum 1.5 to 2 liters a day);
- Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables;
- Moving your body, staying active;
- Adjusting skincare routines with the help of skin professionals, whether they’re in the medical or cosmetic field.
I’m writing this at 9 AM, on the beach, on a beautiful, windless morning, while watching my wide-eyed and curious children experiencing summer just as I remember it: vibrant, carefree, and deeply joyful.
